## Key facts

- **Where does the name WSoptics come from?** It combines the founders and the laser: W stands for Dr. Christoph Weiß, S for Florian Sepp and “optics” for laser optics – WSoptics’ first developments were for laser cutting machines.
- **What is WSi?** WSi is software for costing and work preparation of sheet metal parts and assemblies. It reads CAD files, breaks assemblies down into single parts, lays out every manufacturing step, and calculates times, costs and tiered prices from that.
- **How do you pronounce WSi?** Letter by letter: “double-u – ess – eye”.
- **What is Costonaut?** Costonaut is a CRM for sheet metal manufacturers: software that keeps customers, contacts and requests in one place and carries every request from arrival to accepted quote. It collects requests from email, upload and web form, calculates them and turns the bill of materials into a quote your customer accepts online.
- **What is WSi Shop?** WSi Shop is your own online shop for sheet metal parts: your customers upload STEP or DXF files, choose material and finishing and see their price at once. WSi calculates every part, and WSoptics runs the shop on its own servers at its headquarters in Germany, under your domain.
- **Which file formats can WSi import?** WSi imports STEP, DXF and GEO files, as well as its own WSi project files. STEP files are read with their assembly structure; DXF files containing several parts are split apart in the 2D editor.
- **Which manufacturing processes does WSi calculate?** WSi costs laser, plasma and waterjet cutting, tube cutting, die bending and sheet metal folding, welding and other joining processes, and surface treatments such as powder coating, painting and hot-dip galvanising – more than 70 processes in all. Custom processes can be added.
- **Can WSi cost entire assemblies?** Yes. WSi explodes whole assemblies automatically and categorises sheet metal parts, tube parts and purchased parts, without you having to break the assembly apart by hand.
- **Does WSi integrate with my ERP system?** Yes. WSi sends the bill of materials and the process graph to your ERP system as JSON, over HTTP or as a file. IT-Blech and Trumpf Oseon have their own dedicated interfaces.
- **Which formats does WSi export?** Geometry as STEP, DXF, SVG, GEO and glTF; bills of materials as JSON and CSV; bending drawings and routing slips as PDF or DOCX; and quotes as DOCX.
- **Can WSi run without a user interface?** Yes. With wsicli, WSi runs script modules from the command line – for example to sync the database with your ERP system – or answers requests as an HTTP service. The script API is in JavaScript and TypeScript.
- **Is there a free trial?** Yes, WSi can be trialled free of charge for 30 days. Any customisation made during the trial carries over when you move into production use.
- **What are the system requirements?** WSi needs an x86_64 CPU with SSE4.2 and 16 GB of RAM (32 GB recommended). Supported operating systems are Windows 10 build 1809, Windows 11, Windows Server 2019 or newer, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, Debian 13 or newer, Fedora 42 or newer, openSUSE Tumbleweed, and any other Linux distribution with glibc 2.39 or newer.
- **Which operating systems does WSi run on?** WSi is available for Windows and Linux, not for macOS. The installers for the latest version are at the top of the WSi page.
- **What happened to WSi4?** WSi4 is now called WSi. It is the same software under a new name; existing licences continue unchanged.
- **Do I need WSi to use Costonaut?** Costonaut calculates with WSi: Buzz starts the run in the background and the result comes back into the request as a bill of materials. Nothing needs to be installed on your side. If you work with WSi at your desk, you can open a request in WSi and send the result back to Costonaut.
- **Does Costonaut replace WSi?** No. Costonaut is the CRM around the calculation: requests, customers, quotes and follow-up. The calculation runs in WSi.
- **Which files can customers send?** CAD files in STEP, DXF and GEO, WSi projects, PDF and office documents, and images. Archives such as ZIP and 7z are unpacked, as are emails saved as .eml or .msg and winmail.dat attachments.
- **Does Buzz pass drawings to external AI providers?** No. Buzz runs on servers at WSoptics' headquarters in Germany; drawings and request texts are not passed to an external AI provider.
- **Where is my data processed, and what about the GDPR?** In Germany: Costonaut and Buzz run on servers at WSoptics' headquarters. Your data is stored there and processed under the GDPR, and drawings and request texts do not go to an external AI provider.
- **Can I create quotes without AI?** Yes. A quote can be priced entirely by hand whenever you want.
- **How does an accepted quote reach my ERP?** The moment your customer accepts, Costonaut reports the acceptance to your ERP system by webhook, bill of materials included. A request's files can be exported as well.
- **Who runs Costonaut, and who sees my data?** WSoptics runs Costonaut at its headquarters in Germany. Every manufacturer works in its own isolated tenant, and WSoptics sees no more of your data than running the platform requires.
- **Which files can my customers upload?** STEP, DXF, GEO and WSi projects. The shop splits STEP assemblies into their parts. A customer without a CAD file can build simple parts from standard shapes and profiles right in the shop.
- **Who runs the shop?** WSoptics runs your shop on its own servers at its headquarters in Germany, under your domain. You look after your customers and orders, not servers.
- **How does the shop get my look?** Every shop has its own design with your logo, colours and fonts, plus your templates for quotes, order confirmations and invoices.
- **What reaches me with an order?** The order package: order confirmation, delivery note, job cards, XRechnung, the WSi project with its bill of materials and every part as STEP, DXF and PDF drawing.
- **Do I need to install WSi?** No. The shop calculates with WSi on WSoptics' servers. If you work with WSi yourself, open an order's WSi project directly in WSi.
